WHO WE ARE

We are an anti-racist movement of educators, caregivers, and workers fighting to dismantle structural anti-Black racism so that all children are safe, nurtured, and loved. As employees of the most segregated and one of the most policed school systems in the country, we commit to actively pursuing racial justice in New York City’s early childhood education system.

To build this future, we will:

  • Organize for and champion the concrete, substantive changes necessary for DECE to become an equitable, anti-racist organization.

our values

In our pursuit of an anti-racist school system, we commit to the following values:

  • We make our own power. The power of our movement is derived from our own diversity and collective unity, not bestowed upon us by anything or anyone. Together, we are powerful enough to demand and achieve structural change.

  • We wield curiosity and creativity as tools to achieve liberation. As a movement for transformational change, we seek new perspectives, imagine more than what is currently accepted as possible, and push ourselves, our leadership, and our city beyond the institutionalized boundaries created and sustained by white supremacy.

  • We recognize that racial justice is part of a larger, collective struggle. Our liberation is bound with one another, and racial justice will be achieved when everyone is liberated from all forms of oppression and violence, particularly those along lines of class, gender, sexuality, and disability.

  • We organize in solidarity with others. In our movement for justice, we collaborate and build power with outside groups and colleagues from across the DOE. In all our work, we respect and learn from organizers before us, whose fights make ours possible.

  • We model the leadership we seek. We organize and make decisions transparently and collaboratively, embracing disagreement and discomfort as part of the process.

  • We value process as much as product. We work patiently, thoughtfully, and inclusively. Reflection, feedback, and iteration are integral parts of our cycle of action.

  • We care for and create inclusive space for one another. Our vision is bold and our work is difficult. We intentionally make space to care for ourselves and for one another so that we can sustain our individual bodies and spirits, as well as our collective well-being.
